Tanka is a unrhymed Japanese poem consisting of 5 lines, 5/7/5/7/7, and 31 syllables. The following are the very first two tankas I ever written:

Snowy egret finds
joy in a gulp from the strait's
briny abundance
While its beauty wades through still
waters I remain in awe

Emerald, ruby
sapphire blend with opal dust
Hummingbird hovers
A tiny jewel case amidst
azaleas and fuchsias
